Angle House

The façade of Angle House gives little away as to what’s inside. And that is very much the point. The family wanted a subdued exterior that provided privacy and seclusion from the streetscape, and an interior that slowly revealed itself, provoking a sense of surprise. Beyond the restrained black-painted timber and white brick façade, the interior is warm and playful with light and spacious volumes, birch ply joinery and pops of colour.

The angled form and geometries of the house are inspired by the clients’ appreciation for compact, brutalist Japanese architecture and are a solution to the constraints of the site – the setbacks, overlooking and orientation and the awkward, sloping block. A lightwell in the peaked roof draws light into the living room and maximises winter sun. The bedroom on the second floor takes advantage of the view, while the children’s bedrooms to the rear connect to the garden.
